WIFT Houston CoSponsors 4th Annual Italian Retrospective: Signore e Signore: Leading Ladies of Italian Cinema beginning August 20 and concluding September 21. See WIFT CALENDAR for complete screening information.

As the Pacific Cinematheque observes, “from international superstars and sultry temptresses to fast-talking firebrands, Italy’s cinema has given us some of the greatest actresses ever to grace the screen.”

Made possible by Cinecittà International, a division of Cinecittà Holding; the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Consulate General of Italy in Houston (Cristiano Maggipinto, consul general); and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Los Angeles (Francesca Valente, director). Special thanks to Rosaria Focarelli, Cinecittà Holding. Cosponsored by Women in Film & Television Houston.

Signore e Signore will also be the last major cultural event in Houston that the Consul General of Italy in Houston, Cristiano Maggipinto, is supporting before his assignment to a new city by the end of this year. Maggipinto has enthusiastically been a sponsor for each annual Italian film retrospective at the MFAH, and the museum celebrates his term as Consul General here. He will introduce the festival's first screening on August 21.

In addition, filmgoers will be invited to a reception in his honor on Sept 20, following the final film.

Special Screening: "The Open Road" with Q&A Following

Saturday, August 29th @ 10:45AM, at Angelika Film Center
510 Texas Street (at Smith St.) Houston, TX 77002
Cost: $7.75 (matinee admission) - validated parking with ticket purchase

Join WIFT Houston and SWAMP for a special screening of
the new feature film "The Open Road" starring Jeff Bridges and Justin Timberlake.

Synopsis: In this heartwarming comedy, minor leaguer Carlton Garret (Justin Timberlake) takes an unexpected road trip to track down his estranged father, legendary baseball player
Kyle Garret (Jeff Bridges) when Carlton's mother (Mary Steenburgen) becomes sick.

Knowing his charming yet painfully immature dad's likelihood to disappoint, Carlton enlists his on-again-off-again girlfriend Lucy (Kate Mara) for emotional support. Once reunited, Carlton struggles to deal with the series of misadventures caused by his father's antics, including missed flights, car trouble and bathroom brawls. Years of miscommunication, frustration and comically awkward attempts at bonding come to a head as the mismatched trio make their way from Ohio back home to Houston to reunite the family.

Q & A with Director Michael Meredith and Co-Producer Laurie Foxx following the screening (moderated by Alfred Cervantes, Deputy Director of the Houston Film Commission).

WIFT NIGHT OUT AT THE MOVIES

The location for the promotional screening will be announced as soon as it is known. Bob Berney, known and loved by many Texas filmmakers - just about all indie filmmakers as well as film lovers would be more accurate - is back with a new distribution company, and the leopard is not changing his spots. Thankfully, his focus is still on the filmmaking, and hopefully he can continue to make giant hits out of what would otherwise be labeled "art house fare."

The new company, Apparition, begins with Jane Campion's latest, BRIGHT STAR, and WIFT gets to see it first, at August's WIFT NIGHT OUT AT THE MOVIES, Monday, August 31. It's a promotional screening, so it's free, and you won't want to miss it.

The drama is based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, which was cut short by Keats' untimely death at age 25.

It was nominated for the Golden Palm at this years Cannes Film Festival. Campion, you will recall was writer/director of "The Piano" (1993) and won the Oscar for "Best Original Screenplay," and was nominated for "Best Director" in 1994, only the second female to ever be nominated in the latter category.

Tom Logan Seminar 2009

Tom Logan is returning to Houston in October, It is the wish of Pastorini-Bosby Talent to have EVERY ACTOR WE REPRESENT take the Tom Logan seminar. What he teaches and accomplishes in three days is that good.

Tom is a director of feature films, television episodes & pilots, and national and international commercials. As a director, Tom sits in auditions about 40 days per year, sometimes seeing more than 400 actors in one day. He has collected data over his many years in the business and is astounded (as you will be) with what that compiled data tells. What color clothes, appointment time or position on screen increases your chances of being cast more than any other? Who gets cast and why? He will answer these questions plus many more in the first day’s workshop “The Business of Show Business.”

The second and third days are the “On Camera Commercial, TV & Film Acting” workshops. Tom uses his own brand of humor to present this very different and informative instruction. This is not repeat information that you’ve heard before. Tom presents tools and tips that you can use immediately to greatly improve your acting. He will cover commercials, television & film in this ‘hands on’ seminar where each actor will be on camera numerous times using his techniques and guidance. This is material that is not currently being taught in Houston - that’s why we feel it so important that you participate.
Each of the agents from Pastorini-Bosby Talent has attended his seminar. We have watched seasoned actors greatly improve. We have had actors ask us “…why hasn’t anyone taught this stuff before? It’s so important and EASY!” We have seen actors who were not getting call-backs or bookings turn the tables. You can’t get a job if you don’t audition well, and this seminar will, among other things, show you how to perfect your audition technique.

Tom Logan will be in Houston to present this seminar October 5, 6 &7, 2009. Each seminar is limited to 25 attendees, and we always have a waiting list, so please reserve your spot EARLY.

Additional information is available on the WIFT Web site CALENDAR, and at www.pbtalent.com/blog. Be sure to send the registration form at the same time that you mail your check. Registration Form and fees posted at www.pbtalent.com/blog.

WIFT Advisory Board Member Receives Hero Award

Council Member Jolanda "Jo" Jones and her son, Jiovanni "Jio" Jones received the prestigious Hero Award in Los Angeles at the Real Heroes Among Us Awards Ceremony on May 29th at Universal Studios.

Jio and Council Member Jones saved the life of Megan Kaplan, a young girl trapped in a burning car, minutes before it exploded.

The pair was chosen from a national pool of candidates for one of six top honors. Actor Dean Cain hosted the star-studded event that featured presenters like "Sugar" Shane Mosley, Tatyana Ali, Kelly Hu, Kevin Sorbo, Efren Ramirez and performances by Brian McKnight and American Idol's LaKisha Jones.

The WIFT Breakfast Rap Returns!

May 20th marked the return of the monthly WIFT Breakfast Rap which Jolene McMaster began on a six-month trial in 2008. WIFT VP Marc Isaacs hosted the latest edition at Java Java Cafe in The Heights. WIFT members in attendance included producer Karen Aptekar and producer/actor Ben Johnson. The informal industry chat session also drew editor - and prospective new member - Shari Blakemore to Java Java. P.S. The Vermont Maple coffee was sensational!

PHOTO: Rebecca Spera

The Breakfast Rap in June was hosted by WIFT Board Member Sabrina Miskelly and well-attended at the Alden Hotel's a+ bar & grille downtown. About 15 WIFT members showed up to mix, mingle, sip coffee and meet Rebecca Spera, the host of KTRK's new beauty and fashion show "Mirror/Mirror." Rebecca received a Lone Star Emmy Award for On Camera Talent in 2007, and her producing talents have been recognized with three Lone Star Emmy nominations.

Stay tuned for info on July's Breakfast Rap! It's going to be hosted by WIFT Secretary Melannie O'Connor. You won't want to miss this opportunity to meet new people and mingle with those you know in a small, casual setting.

The 48 Hour Film Project

In June, board member Heather Tucker led a team participating in the 48 Hour Film Project in Houston. Heather served as Executive Producer of the Irony Coast Productions team, which produced a film about the capture of a supervillian by a team of superheroes. "Execution" featured VP Marc Isaacs and members Ben Johnson, Andrew Kantowski, Amy Mitchell, and Lydia Martinez in on camera roles. Heather Leigh Jackson served as Unit Still Photographer, capturing many arresting images of the costumed characters and other cast members. Studio Movie Grill at CityCentre hosted the premiere of "Execution" - and the slew of films created by Houston area filmmakers IN JUST TWO DAYS.

Heather and the Irony Coast team repeated the 48 Hour Film experience two weeks later for the Austin competition. "Happy Father's Day" featured Marc Isaacs and Andrew Kantowski in supporting roles, and the entire film was shot and edited in Houston. Team members delivered the finished film to a location in Austin, arriving with an hour to spare. The screenings for the film took place at The Stage at 501 Studios in Austin. You'll recognize many of these energetic souls.

48 Hour Film Project Testimonial from WIFT member Denise Boucher

This was my first time being part of the 48 Hour Film Project as a Team Leader/Producer and my experience couldn't have been better.

First, I cannot believe the Support I got from the WIFT MEMBERs and never knew this kind of Kinship existed in the Film industry. Between Jolene McMaster & Rob McKinnon, Marc Isaacs sending me help at every step, Amy Mitchell, Melody Moss, Yankie Grant, always assisting and teaching me what they knew - always ready to lend a hand - was invaluable to me in forwarding my experience futher with filmmaking! It really was a lot of hard work, yet a total blast and surely an adrenaline rush!

Since I do Apartment Locating as my J.O.B., I am used to plugging people into the "Right Fit for their Apartment Home", and so to me, putting together a TEAM for a FILM was just plugging everyone into the right spot for the Film. It was very gratifying, high adrenaline rushes with LOTS OF MONSTER, and everyone working as a Team.

Getting the film in ONTIME was a bit of a challenge, but we had 2 minutes to spare and were "1 out of the 29 Teams" who completed their Films on time within 48 hours. (NOT BAD for A FIRST TIME PRODUCER and OUR FIRST YEAR in the 48HFF.)

I surely would love to do it again and have the opportunity to work with more WIFT MEMBERS on next year's project! We ended up having 26 crew and actors on our Team.

I was pleased with the turnout but of course, but would have loved to have won first year out! But hey, there's always next year right?

Thanks,

Denise Boucher

IN MEMORIUM LINDA LOWE

IN MEMORIUM LINDA LOWE
(1949-2009)
Past President, WIFT Houston, 1998-1999

WIFT Houston received unfortunate news recently of the passing of LINDA LOWE, its third president. Solomon Bachman, one of Linda’s three children, reported that she died in her sleep at home Saturday night.

Linda had just graduated from Texas A&M last year with a degree in Agriculture Leadership & Development. She was working as Communications Specialist for Texas A&M AgriLife at College Station, and was a writer for “The Calvert Tribune” newspaper - her column, “Lowe Profile.” She had been a columnist for the Robertson County Newspapers for six years. A colleague from the paper, contributing writer Melissa Freeman, said this, “Whenever Linda Lowe walked into the newspaper office, the atmosphere changed. The sneaky smile (like she could be up to something), the swish of her silver ponytail, and the twinkle in each eye energized and noticeably brightened a place that can be pretty drab. Those were sweet moments for me. Some of the best.” She had that effect on everyone. She was loving and living the life she dreamed of on her 22-acre ranchette (as she called it), Moondance Ranch.

Here’s an excerpt from Linda’s Web site. The content was written before she completed her recent degree program. Linda wrote, “I regret very few things in my life, but if I could make any changes in my past it would be in the area of my education. I was a teenager in the tumultuous and politically charged ‘60’s. It was an era in which many young people were swept up into the maelstrom of the Viet Nam war issue, civil rights conflicts, the women’s movement, the counter culture, and many things were changing in our country. Unfortunately, I dropped out of school. I did however, find the role of working mother and wife fulfilling and was blessed with three wonderful children, and today, have two some incredible grandchildren.

“Now that my kids are grown, I have finally found a way to pursue completing my education and following a life-long dream to live and work in the world of agriculture.
I have had a successful career in Houston, Texas in the film and video production industry as a writer, producer, and director. I have produced work for large corporate entities, community organizations, and television networks NBC, ABC, and CBS. Now, I want to apply my skills and knowledge in an arena that I am deeply passionate about:
agriculture and all that it encompasses.”

She seemed healthy and wonderfully happy when attending a WIFT event last month. She had driven to Houston to see the MFAH screening of WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS? on Saturday, May 9, and then came to the WIFT hosted reception following the screening at Ernie's On Banks. She was filled with enthusiasm for her life and surroundings. She was also committed to once again getting more involved with WIFT now that her degree at A&M was a fait accompli.

She will be missed by the many whose lives she touched. She will be missed by her family and her many friends at WIFT Houston most of all.

Linda's service will be held on Thursday, June 25, at 2:00 PM at the Sneed Memorial Methodist Church at 306 East Mitchell, Calvert, TX 77837. A celebration of her life will follow at The Moondance Ranch immediately following the service with great music, food, kiddos, and love.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to her family and many friends.

The "8 X 10" Music & Film Industry Conference at Houston Community College – Spring Branch Campus

The Houston Community College Chapter of MEISA (Music & Entertainment Industry Student Association) and Houston Community College presented the first "8X10" Music & Film Industry Conference on Saturday, April 18. Women In Film & Television Houston (WIFT) had the opportunity to present morning and afternoon short film screenings in the Fine Arts Center's new Screening Theater. The morning session presented the best of European Short Films, and the afternoon session, featured two Oscar-nominated shorts selected by WIFT Houston president Jolene McMaster. These were free screenings offered as a sidebar to the conference. "What an asset the Screening Theater has become to an already fine audio and film program at HCC!," reports WIFT President, Jolene McMaster.

Among WIFT members in attendance were panelist Cynthia Neely, Danny Kamin, Casey Kelly, Denise Boucher, and our volunteers Yankie Grant, Melrose Fougere, Laura Thorsten, and Jennifer Joseph. New member Denise Boucher thankfully provided some photos of the day for "The One Sheet." Thank you all for your support!

Though the weather was not kind to the conference, attendance was still very good, and certainly an indicator that such a conference is a valid addition to the current offerings for members of the music and filmmaking community.

Hosting the conference were Attorney Ricky Anderson, and WIFT corporate members Dr. Aubrey Tucker, HCC-NW Division Chair, Fine Arts and Commercial Music, and Dr. Scott Gehman, HCC Division Chair, Audio, Video and Film. Marcus Roberts, President of the HCC Chapter of MEISA opened the conference. Seminars included "Houston's Music Scene," moderated by Dr. Tucker; "Entertainment Attorneys Get Your Deals Done," moderated by Ricky Anderson; "The Houston Film and Television Scene, moderated by Jolene McMaster; "How Can I Get Played??," with Ronnie G, J. Thomas Smith, Esq., and Neal Harrison; and finally, Film Music: The Unseen Drama," moderated by Regina Scruggs, with writer/director Casey Kelly, and producer Jolene McMaster among the panelists. The evening's program featured a "New Artist Music Showcase," hosted by Professor Keno Sims.

WIFT Reaches Out to Young Filmmakers

by WIFT Vice President Marc Isaacs

Young filmmakers are a key part of the future of our industry and on February 27th I got to meet some talented ones. I served as a guest speaker at the "Quack Attack Film Festival" hosted by Lone Star College Cy-Fair Video Production Club. The festival featured a variety of categories for competition including Drama, Comedy, Documentary and Public Service Announcements, and each filmmaker or filmmaking team produced a 5-minute piece. I chose to focus my 15-minute presentation on the importance of networking and developing resources as a fundamental strategy in creating successful projects. I used this to emphasize the difference between their experience as autonomous filmmakers - serving as writers, directors and actors - and the need for professional filmmakers to assemble an entire production team to effectively finish a project. I encouraged students to network among themselves to identify people with different talent, and reach out to professional organizations such as WIFT Houston for mentoring and future job opportunities.

WIFT Helps Shape Tomorrow's Media Professionals

by WIFT VP Marc Isaacs and Secretary Melannie O'Connor

WIFT Houston is honored at the recent invitation to participation in the annual Media Day at Missouri City's Hightower High School held in February. The school's award-winning film and video production program boasts a large collection of awards, including the much-coveted Addy!

Vice President Marc Isaacs organized our involvement and led our lively session with students. Member/Photographer Heather Leigh Jackson performed her usual magic with the camera in documenting the students' contagious enthusiasm. Secretary Melannie O'Connor and WIFT Houston Alumna Carolina Boyd joined in the fun, emphasizing the netowrking and career building advantaages that organizations such as WIFT Houston provide.

The students' technical saavy, creative energy, and project-driven accomplishments are inspirational. And their crew of dedicated instructors is rightfully proud! We sincerely hope many of these young talents will join WIFT Houston as student members and, eventually, as full working members of our profession and our organization.

"As someone who learned on the job, I'm thrilled to see these students are developing technical skills as journalists and storytellers long before their graduation from high school," says WIFT Vice President Marc Isaacs. "They're creating opportunities for themselves thanks to the outstanding program at Hightower, and I'm pleased WIFT Houston can contribute to shaping their future. Who knows? We may be working for these kids someday so it's imperative that we take the time to offer guidance and encouragement now."

Web Site Member Directory

We are ready to add you to the Web Site Member Directory. Being there is totally voluntary. But, can you afford not to be? YOU have to make the initial effort. YOU have to send a headshot (jpeg format) by email to wifth@yahoo.com. When you email us, put in call caps, “WIFT Web Directory” in the subject line. Also include a brief bio and be sure to include your skills. What kind of work are you looking for? Your contact information can be only your e-mail address; you can add phone, Web site, or mailing address. It's your call. It's easy. Check out those members already on the site Directory at www.wift-houston.org and get an idea of amount of detail others have included. It's a business- getting opportunity and it's a benefit of membership. Use it!

What's an Email Address Worth?

Marc Isaacs writes, "Thanks to the new WIFT Web site, we're now providing another touchpoint for contact with fellow members and by potential clients. The Web site Directory serves as a listing of all members and offers biographical information as well as a member's contact information. How valuable is it? Having your contact information readily available could mean the difference between getting hired and missing a terrific opportunity.

As a WIFT board member and an industry veteran, I often receive calls and e-mails from individuals and companies looking to hire talented people like you. Case in point: Recently, I heard from a contact at a NY production company looking to hire a makeup artist for a shoot in Houston. Thanks for our Membership Directory, I was able to supply them with a name in seconds. The production company contacted the makeup artist I recommended - Andrea Schutter - and hired her that day.

The hard copy of the directory is not always within reach, and that's why directing someone to our Web site is a smart alternative. Make sure your contact information is added to the online directory today. It's easy to do, and the next opportunity could be yours."

Web Site Calendar

Make a point to check the Calendar often. It's updated daily - whenever something new is scheduled or submitted. Don't find out after-the-fact that you missed a free screening or a workshop, or a great party like the SAG Awards Viewing Party. The Web Site Calendar will not only have WIFT-sponsored events but also classes, seminars, workshops, screenings, and selected events from other industry organizations for you to attend when interest and time allow.

Cynthia Neely Reports (Posted 01/24/09)

The effort to transform the Houston Astrodome into Astrodome Studios, a complex bringing together businesses that serve the film and media production industry, continues to move forward rapidly. The plan has been discussed with county officials for several months and the formal proposal is set to be presented in February. The proposed Astrodome Studios will allow producers to find everything they need to create their movies, videos, commercials, video games, sound, and music without leaving the building.

Director/Writer/Producer Richard Linklater supports the concept saying, "It's great news that the Astrodome, in my home town, may become a production studio for Texas. We need a studio big enough to handle major motion pictures. Having vendors and suppliers based right there under one giant roof would create a force to be reckoned with! I'd love an opportunity to make a film there." Companies interested in joining the growing list of potential tenants at Astrodome Studios and those who wish to request investor packets should email info@astrodomestudios.net or visit www.astrodomestudios.net. Sign the petition on the Web site to show your support. The project is being spearheaded by Cynthia Neely and Elise Hendrix (pictured above).

Eleese Lester Reports (Posted 1/14/09)

Eleese reports that she recently completed filming her first starring role in a feature film as Naomi in "The Book of Ruth." Sherry Morris stars as Ruth with Carman playing Boaz, both well- known Christian singers. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF ONE

An e-mail to WIFT members from chapter president Cynthia Neely resulted in an amazing Christmas for a poor grandmother raising her four little grandsons alone. The grandmother was featured in a Chronicle Goodfellows article and was to receive toys for Christmas - but it sure seemed she could use a whole lot more.

Grandma now has heat and the boys have coats and gloves (just in time), a stocked pantry, clothes, children's books, art supplies, games, toys, sports equipment, bicycles, a TV and a DVD player. They also received gift cards to Target, H-E-B, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Sears, plus cash and checks, amounting to $1,205 - thanks to some mighty generous and thoughtful people!

AXIUM PAYROLL DECLARE BANKRUPTCY

Variety Magazine

By JUSTIN CHANG, MICHAEL FLEMING

Axium Intl., the entertainment industry's third-largest provider of payroll and accounting services, has closed unexpectedly and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Axium shuttered operations Tuesday, a day after its lenders froze the company's bank accounts. Immediate impact was unclear, but some of the frozen funds included paychecks for film projects.

Director Charlie Matthau told Daily Variety that much of the money he was owed on the recently completed indie drama "Baby O" was frozen Tuesday. "I was supposed to go pick up a $75,000 check from the DGA, until they told me there was this problem, that Axium had gone out of business and all the accounts were frozen, " said the helmer, son of the late Walter Matthau. "I feel totally violated, and I'm hoping that the Guild will be able to help me." Matthau said Axium notified him recently that the money had been wired into his account. "In fact, they'd done no such thing, and they were hiding this 400- pound gorilla of bankruptcy," he added. "Because of that memo, I hope that the City Attorney or District Attorney looks into this. It has affected me and likely a whole lot of other people."

A Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing is designed to govern the liquidation of company assets. Axium reps were not available for comment Tuesday, and the headquarters offices on Wilshire Boulevard were shuttered. Axium president Ruben Rodriguez had left the firm. Axium employees were told Monday not to come to work until further notice, and if in contact with their clients, to tell them that Axium could no longer process their business.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG's deputy national exec director and general counsel, said in a statement, "Screen Actors Guild is investigating the situation and will take every action possible to protect the interests of our members. While we are closely following the status of Axium, it is important to bear in mind that payment to talent is ultimately the responsibility of the employers and not the payroll companies they choose to engage." Axium's recent work included providing the payroll services for "Grace Is Gone," "The Savages," "Feast of Love" and "Babel."

A veteran accountant at a production company who regularly used Axium for projects said he was completely stunned by the bankruptcy. "I never saw this coming or imagined that this could happen," the exec said. "Axium had a terrific budget system, and software that allowed you access to records for all of the productions you did over the past several years. If that software is frozen, I don't know what I'm going to do."

FILM NEWS/AUSTIN CHRONICLE

BY JOE O'CONNELL

Austin gets Pitt, Dallas dumps Travolta, Denzel pays up

Ready for a thick slice of post-Christmas celeb gossip, Texas-style? As we told you way back in September, Terrence Malick is planning a spring shoot hereabouts of Tree of Life, his long-gestating project with Sean Penn in the cast. What we didn't tell you is Brad Pitt, according to Variety, is in talks to replace Heath Ledger. Meanwhile, John Travolta is no longer attached to the big-screen version of TV's Dallas, which may or may not shoot in Big D. It gets weirder. New York Post's "Page Six" column says the film, years in the planning, is now going from drama to kitschy comedy. And in East Texas, Denzel Washington left a $1 million tip after a premiere screening of his The Great Debaters at Marshall's Wiley College, which was the real-life backdrop for the debate team featured in the movie. Washington's bucks will go to revive the school's debate team.

Remake it, and they will come

The Alamo Drafthouse's latest side project is aimed at you, the goofy wannabe filmmaker. It's FilmmakingFrenzy.com, a website devoted to the wackiest filmmaking contests the Alamo can conjure. First up is Rewind Kindly, inspired by the Michel Gondry's film Be Kind Rewind, which opens Jan. 25 and features Jack Black as a guy who accidentally erases every movie at a local video store and attempts to reconstruct them by acting them out. In that vein, contest teams will have until Jan. 18 to complete an up-to-five-minute, homemade, low-budget remake of a popular Hollywood film. I'm envisioning either Being There with Chance the gardener strolling down South Congress or perhaps Fargo done with Claymation, but a Star Wars remake is a safer bet. Entries will screen at the Alamo.

And the rest ...

Count director Richard Linklater, actor Luke Wilson, and Zadi Diaz, creator of the Web series EPIC-FU, among judges for the Greenlight Awards honoring the best online episodic series. Alina Fernández Revuelta, daughter of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, has signed a deal with Austin-based Artists Relations Group to tell her life story on the big screen... Villa Muse Studios is taking a step toward its planned 2008 groundbreaking with the hiring of Barry Bongiovi to manage the recording complex and Ed Evans as technical director. The plan is for a production and postproduction facility for film, television, game development, animation, advertising, video, and restoration... Disney Channel fans may not know that As the Bell Rings, a series of two- to five-minute sitcom shorts set outside a principal's office and airing on the network, was shot at Del Valle High School... BELO BRINGING LOCAL NEWS TO YAHOO

Yahoo said the additional clips from the Belo stations broaden its local news video coverage to include 18 of the nation's top 25 markets.

Belo President Dunia A. Shive said the agreement will help both companies benefit from the rapid growth of online video.

The videos will be provided from Web sites of Belo stations in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, New Orleans, Phoenix, St. Louis and Seattle/Tacoma and Spokane, Wash; Portland, Ore.; Tucson, Ariz.; Charlotte, N.C.; Louisville, Ky., and Hampton/Norfolk, Va.

WIFT Board Member Jenny Bosby and WIFT Advisory Council Member Beverly Pastorini are pleased to announce that their client, Charles Sanders, is getting plenty of deserved limelight. Sanders recently was shot in a guest role for Friday Night Lights and then trekked to New Mexico to be in scenes with the now newly-awarded Oscar winner Alan Arkin in Sunshine Cleaning, an indie feature film. Ironically, Arkin just won his Best Supporting Actor nod for another bit of sunshine, in Little Miss Sunshine. Over the past two years, Sanders has done several projects in New Mexico and Pastorini-Bosby actively pursues opportunities for Texas actors there. Until the Texas legislature approves funding for production incentives in the Lone Star State, other states, including New Mexico and Louisiana will continue to steal our thunder. Please go to www.txmpa.org to find out how you can help the Texas Motion Picture Alliance seek laws allowing competitive production incentives here to enable more production business.

Member Eleese Lester Featured in Houston Chronicle
For Friday Night Lights Role

Jan. 24, 2007, 9:05AM
Friday Night Lights role a homecoming for local actress

By LOUIS B. PARKS
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

Getting a role on the Jan. 24 episode of Friday Night Lights (7 p.m. , NBC/Channel 2) was a homecoming for Houston actress Eleese Lester. She started acting in Austin, where the show shoots, 26 years ago.

"I was a schoolteacher and was really dying on the vine," says Lester. Then somebody suggested she do what she really wanted, acting, and she got her first small film role within a year.

In Friday Night Lights Lester appears in what could become a recurring role as Barbara Lee, a close friend — very close — of Dillon's mayor, Luce Rodell (Libby Villari).

"The mayor invites the coach (Eric Taylor, played by Kyle Chandler) and his wife (Connie Britton), and I'm sitting beside the mayor and we all get drunk together. The coach and wife are figuring out, 'Oh, my gosh, they're not just friends.' It's pretty funny."

So far, Lester is not even sure if Lee is a last name or if she's just one of those Texas women with a double first name.
"They called her Barbara Lee. There was nowhere in the notes saying she had a last name. That happens sometimes. It may be the writers just haven't gotten around to giving her one."

She's hoping to learn a lot more about Barbara Lee if the character is written into future episodes.

"When I auditioned, they asked me if I would be willing to come back and do more on this character, and of course I said yes. It's a really interesting character. After shooting, the director said, 'We will be seeing you again.' "

Lester's 26-year career has been pretty full with everything from commercials and industrial films to voice-overs, but her résumé also includes professional plays, some with Houston's Main Street Theater, and two dozen dramatic film and television roles, a few of which are listed on imdb.com. She was in four episodes of Walker, Texas Ranger and played a large role in the CBS movie Shadows of Desire with Nicollette Sheridan and Adrian Pasdar. She also teaches acting in Houston.

Back from a whirlwind trip to LA, Darian Ward knows she is a “BLESSED woman.” Darian was awarded an all-expenses paid trip to the west coast for the NATPE TV Producer Boot Camp. She says, “FOX and the National Association of Minority Media Executives flew 6 of us from across the country to LA for lunch and pitch meetings. More than 400 TV producers were there pitching their shows and documentaries.
